Easy Ways to Freshen Up Your Home Office

The warm weather on our doorstep, you may be slightly impassioned to make the most of your home office. It’s true that sunshine gives us energy and puts us in a good mood so the season is one where we generally feel ready to accomplish almost anything.

However, your home office doesn’t feel just quite ready to make the leap. So how do you transform a drab and weary home office into something designed to make the most of your creativity?

You don’t have to completely redecorate to breathe a new lease of life into your office; all you need is a few simple steps and you’ll soon be giving J.K Rowling a run for her money!

Get Organised

Before you can sit down and concentrate you have to really get organised and ensure your space is free from mess and clutter. This may well take you a while – especially if you tend to pile stacks of paper on top of the other in a, sort-of, disorganised mess!

Begin de-cluttering by cleaning your whole workstation away and putting the items in a box. Then slowly, decide what you need, what you can throw away and what you can donate to charity or sell online. A clear space will really give you a clear mind when it comes to sitting down and doing work, so this is super useful.

Reorganise

Whether that’s investing in a new binder, a new diary, a new notebook or even reorganising your online calendar – now that you’re clutter free, it’s time to sit down and enjoy the fruits of your labour by reorganising your office.

Take some time to clean it up, arrange everything neatly and investing in a new planner or notebook will encourage you to set goals in both your personal and working life; keeping an eye on them and ticking them off when they’ve been achieved.

Remember to put the items you use everyday within easy reach and the rest should be packed away neatly in drawers, folders and in storage containers. Otherwise, you run the risk of overloading the space quickly again where it becomes less productive.

Ensure your workstation is comfortable, too. If you’re planning on spending a significant amount of time in there, it may be worth reconsidering the uncomfortable chair or the slightly-too-high desk – invest in some quality furniture pieces. Try out a chair that will ensure you have full back support, is adjustable and that you can sit comfortably on for long periods of time. Your feet should be flat on the floor and your elbows at a 90-degree angle to the desk.

Let There be Light

It’s important to try and let as much light in as possible. Natural light is ideal for creating a cohesive, productive space where you can work so try but if the room is small, dark or windowless; give the illusion of light with some strategically placed mirrors, light reflecting colours on the walls and even trick your eye into believing you’re seeing your landscape by installing a pretty nature picture and some clever lighting above your head.

Can you rearrange your desk so it looks out onto the window? There’s nothing worse than staring at a blank wall when you’re trying to be inspired so be sure to swap around the furniture so that it fits and you’ll have something a little more pleasant to gaze out on when writer’s block hits.
